See below for an interesting talk on how social media bots are used to influence elections, push propaganda and spread fake news.

Dear all,

We have invited Dr. Mike Preuss of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) in Münster, Germany, to visit LIACS. Mike’s research areas include Artificial Intelligence, Optimization, Games and Social Media Computing.

On Tuesday March 27th he will not only give a 15-minute This Weeks Discoveries Lecture, but he will also give a longer and more interactive lecture for LIACS’ staff.

The title and abstract for this LIACS lecture is as follows:

Social Media and its Bots: Some Insights from a Forming Field
Social Media has become an important source of information and means of virtual social interaction that nowadays encompasses more than a third of the worlds population and is still growing. Recently, we have seen several election campaigns with surprising outcome (Brexit, US election) and have started to wonder if and how social bots have been involved in Propaganda and opinion manipulation. Even Facebook now acknowledges so-called “information operations”. During the last 2 years, the PropStop project has detected and investigated several occurrences of such operations, e.g. in the last weeks before the German general elections of September 2017. We report on the current state, especially concerning the use and detection of social bots, and envision how the situation will evolve in the near future.

You are all invited!

When:  Tuesday March 27th, 15:00 – 16:00
Where: Room 407/409, Snellius Building
