Abstract

Today video gaming is the fastest growing form of entertainment in modern societies. We are currently at the fourth generation exposed to video games, but the first generation where this gaming is the primary form of their entertainment. As it turns out, gaming is one of the most engaging forms of entertainment and this is need for engagement that is being distilled further into our society. This gives breading ground to a new phenomenon called gamification. Here is where game design is leaking outside the bounds of games themselves. It is blurring the lines between fun and work. This paper will take a look at the definition of gamification and categorize it in three groups. We will expose the gamification process and how this is different from normal game design. We will discuss two example cases using this process and highlight some important properties and risks of gamification.
