Mapping the Field of Organism-involved Computer Games


Abstract

Although computer games that involve live non-human organisms are relatively new there is already a surplus of namings used for such games. With a historical inspection of the domain we identify the variety of namings currently used. Based on these findings we propose a classification diagram that enables us to compare the different fields and their mutual relations. Furthermore, we identify the more established fields and map them within the diagram. The remaining namings are examined: to what extent do they overlap and which can be regarded obsolete? Using this information we propose a new field, and moreover we propose an overall term for all computer games that involve live non-human organisms.
