On The Liking Of Modern Art – Hanna Schraffenberger

“I do like art. I don’t like modern art. Thus the problem with modern art has to be that it is modern.” This sounds logical at first. I was told so several times and consequently, I started believing it – until I had to visit my dentist.
Personal observations made in art museums, galleries, museum shops, at the dentist and on the internet serve as a starting point for a series of short essays exploring the liking of modern art. This graduation presentation takes up topics such as the influence of perceived effort on the liking of art, raises questions (“Do art experts like art which they consider bad?”), gives answers to common reactions (“My kid could have done that!”), explores the possible role of technology (e.g. falling in love with paintings online) and leaves room for personal experiences.

Bliff – Exploring Various Ways of Olfaction in Board Games – Oxalis Atindriyaratri
In the context of board games, sense of sight is usually the only sense that the players need. The other senses are merely an addition, or even, an “icing on a cake”. This also happens to sense of smell, where scents are most of the time used side by side with images. Moreover, in wider context, the sense of smell is neglected from the modern world due to its lack of objectivity compared to other senses.
In this research we attempt to develop a board game in which olfaction is the only sense required by the players to advance through the game. The research tries to explore various ways in challenging players’ sense of smell, how can they answer these challenges when they are given different scents, and how to have the game to be engaging yet not giving olfactory fatigue to players.
