Cool Cucumbers & HYPE, Thursday June 12
The Media Technology and ArtScience programmes present Cool Cucumbers: a series of evenings organized by students, and presenting a mix of speakers from many different backgrounds who aim to inform and inspire. Each evening Cool Cucumbers presents a particular theme and is exploring the borders of art, media, technology and science within that theme. Furthermore, Cool Cucumbers stimulates the audience to ask questions and participate in discussions within an informal environment with drinks. Bring your friends!
HYPE
A hype comes out of nothing and often disappears just as quickly and anonymously as it came. What is this phenomenon? Why does it happen? Is it coincidental or directed by a small group of designers and marketeers? What are its consequences? What traces does it leave in our world? Speakers with diverse backgrounds will present their uniquely intriguing views in connection to HYPE. We promise an inspiring, refreshingly surprising evening!
Speakers
Vivien Waszink: Smirten & Sleevefacen
The hype leaves traces everywhere, and especially in our language. ‘Smirten’, ‘Sleevefacen’; they are just some examples of the fantastic words we make up to describe our hypes. This evening Vivien Waszink will show us some of the most striking ‘neologismen’; words that appear into our language hand in hand with the hype, and often dissapear just as quickly. Our language changes with our world – this makes the ‘neologisme’ an intriguing indicator or descriptor of our hypes.
Waszink works for the INL (the Institute for Dutch Lexocoligy) where she is an editor to the Dutch dictionary and researches ‘neologismen’. The INL – ‘treasurer of the Dutch language’ – is responsible for making the Dutch dictionary.
