V2_ institute for the unstable media in Rotterdam asked me to forward some information about their upcoming DEAF festival in May. I’ll do this in a couple of posts. Some of the info is in Dutch and some in English

DEAF -The Power of Things – rondleiding en tentoonstelling

Als één van de belangrijkste internationale festivals op het gebied van technologie, kunst en samenleving biedt DEAF (Dutch Electronic Art Festival) in mei 2012 een inspirerende tentoonstelling met innovatieve en toonaangevende kunst. Via een innovatieve tentoonstelling, workshops, seminars en een symposium geeft het DEAF festival een actuele blik op de kunst in het creatieve veld.

Symposium
Het symposium richt zich op de vraag hoe de eeuwenoude idee van schoonheid van betekenis kan zijn voor de 21ste eeuw. Met een grote keur aan sprekers zoals Steven Shaviro, Wendy Steiner, Philip Beesley onder leiding van Lars Spuybroek, zullen ingaan op dit thema van technologie als de nieuwe natuur en de nieuwe schoonheid.

Tentoonstelling
De tentoonstelling heeft als thema The Power of Things en wil een vernieuwende blik geven op de invloed van materiaaleigenschappen op ons bestaan via technologische kunst. Gebaseerd op de theorieën uit Vibrant Matter van Jane Bennett is de tentoonstelling een unieke mogelijkheid om de horizon op het gebied van kunst en technologie binnen onze samenleving te verruimen.

DEAF -The Power of Things – Workshop

Niet alleen een rondleiding maar ook zelf aan de slag? Dat is mogelijk met het DEAF workshopprogramma. DEAF organiseert in samenwerking met het NIMk (Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst) workshops kunst en technologie voor studenten.

Workshop ‘VIBROBOTS’ (NIMk)
Eenvoudig robots leren maken? Dat kan! Van allerlei gerecycled materiaal zoals piepschuim en staal, tandenstokertjes en stof worden Vibrobots gemaakt. Door een motortje aan te sluiten op een batterij komt de robot tot leven. Aan het eind van de workshop krijgt iedere student zijn eigen, zelfgemaakte, bewegende robotje mee naar huis.

VITAL BEAUTY Symposium 16th May 11:00 – 17:00 h. De Balie, Amsterdam

This symposium focuses on the question of how the age-old notion of beauty can have a meaning fit for the 21st century. Our need for beauty and our pleasure in it have not been annihilated, as hard as the 20th century’s various forms of modernism tried to erase it from art and life and supplant it with “the sublime.” The sublime is awesome: it does not evoke empathy, let alone sympathy with the world and the things in it. Beauty does: it not only makes life interesting but brings well-being into the picture.
We do not associate beauty in any way with Prince Charles-type neoclassicism, but neither do we link it to recent attempts to come up with a “bioclassicism” that would reintroduce the ideal proportions of natural systems as measures for human aesthetics. Technology is the new nature, and the updated kind of beauty we’ll explore in this symposium is a technological one. We will call this beauty “vital,” in honor of the 19th-century art critic John Ruskin, who distinguished between “typical,” conventional beauty and the “vital” kind, which surprises us with new connections, relations and potentialities.
We start with two statements by Alfred N. Whitehead, that “Beauty is a wider, and more fundamental, notion than Truth” and that “Beauty is the one aim which by its very nature is self-justifying.” It is our belief that, without beauty, calls for sustainability and all other forms of ecological responsibility lack conviction. This is why we wish to explore vital beauty as a means of making all living processes valuable again.

Moderator:
LARS SPUYBROEK Lars Spuybroek is a professor in Architectural Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
He worked as an artist and architect with his Rotterdam-based office NOX, producing works as diverse as HtwoOexpo, the Maison Folie in Lille, Son-O-House and D-tower. Over the years, he has exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, the Venice Biennale, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He has published several books, including NOX: Machining Architecture (Thames and Hudson, 2004), The Architecture of Continuity (V2_Publishing, 2008), Research and Design: The Architecture of Variation (Thames and Hudson, 2009). The second book in the Research and Design: Textile Tectonics (NAi Publishers, 2011) and The Sympathy of Things: Ruskin and the Ecology of Design (V2_Publishing, 2011).

With the symposium a book will be published – available at the symposium – with the title Vital Beauty.

€ 50,- regular visitors € 25,- students

Next to the symposium different workshops and seminars will be organised. In the former post office on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam an exhibition is set up within the theme. Special tours will be organised for educational purposes.
