I would like to know your experiences with the wireless network in 413. The intention is to come with a good description of the problems and contact the helpdesk. Please try to be as complete as possible in your description.

WLAN 3, weak signal, generally no connection
WLAN 2, some times connection, mostly time-out while connecting
MIGuest, best signal but really really slow, slower that 28.8K…

WLAN 9, i don’t know te password

OS: Mac OSX
Machine: Compaq 311 mini laptop.

On my iphone, it is sligtly better.

I also get the impression when many people are using wireless, the connection gets worse.

It would be great if you can include your machine and OS type in the post. Thanks!

WLAN 3: recently every time connection timeout (can’t connect)
miguest: works, but slow and with a lot of blocked ports (mail)

Mac OSX on a MacBook Pro.

WLAN3: Usually able to connect, but at times very irritating slow (I think it’s indeed when many people are using it or something like that). Sometimes connection fails for no apparent reason.
eduroam: Works stable, but connection doesn’t reach 413 (at least with doors closed I believe it doesn’t), however, if you’re in the main canteen it’s the fastest option. Login with ULCN account.

I have a Macbook running OSX 10.6

I get the idea that WLAN3 fails miserably when there are too many people in class too. During breaks it works most of the time. Eduroam in the canteen is indeed the most stable and fast option for me, unfortunately the signal doesn’t reach 413.

Machine: MacBook3,1 running OSX 10.6

wlan 3: pretty slow, I agree with the statement that it seems to be slower with more people using it. I would say it is slow about 50% of the time I use it, 25% it works fine, and the other 25% it does nothing at all.
wlan 9 (which has the same password as wlan 3 by the way): I don’t use much, but seems about the same as wlan 3.
eduroam: I have trouble seeing this network, the signal isn’t strong enough to connect.

Macbook with OSX 10.5.

Thanks a lot for the posts. Other posts are still very welcome, also from Windows users.

oh Here it is!

I have a real laptop.
I only use wlan3, some sign on my laptop says RF: 802.11b/g/n, I guess that’s my network card.

My experience with the wifi network is that it runs pretty ok if there’s no-one in class and nobody is accessing internet.
So if I’m FB’ing and others see me do that, they think “Wow, I wanna be just as cool” and then the chainreaction starts and I can’t FB anymore:P

So my guess is the router is limited to only a few connections per time interval.

The fact you can’t all use Facebook during class is by design.

Aaaah, FB = Facebook. Well, I was wondering what Wynand was up-to during class. Remind me to keep an eye on him during my next class. grin

Are there any updates on the WLAN status in 413/408/406?

Yesterday I spotted two guys with WLAN testing equipment in front of room 413. So apparently something is happening.

I would like to report that working in room 135 for a week now the signal strenght of WLAN3 is much stronger (I am sitting below a wifi accesspoint).
However even while working there in the weekend with almost nobody in the liacs building the connection go’s on and off all the time! really annoying when you work online with google docs. This proves that the problems have not much to do with signal strength and the amount of users on the network. Probably some crappy gateway or router, because I am still connected, but there is just no connection to the web.

I think that there is some thing about using WLAN3. It should be used only by 802.11N wireless clients I think (so fast ones only). If only a single 802.11B/G computer connects to WLAN3, the whole thing switches back to slow. I think…
