On May 15 I will give a short presentation at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) / pyData on the intersection between creative research (/coding) and data science / AI, using examples of actual media tech students research.

A bit of a trek for a 30 min talk, as it is in Den Bosch, but in the very pleasant surroundings of an old convent. And we can always grab a drink afterwards.

Abstract:
Data science is not just an interesting field of research, but also a tool for students (and anyone interested in research) to become an autonomous researcher. Just like an autonomous artist, an autonomous researcher works from personal inspiration, is not afraid to tinker and research-by-doing and is open to asking unusual questions and follow unusual research approaches. In this talk Peter van der Putten will present a number of inspirational examples by student researchers from the Media Technology program at Leiden University, ranging from a machine that has learned to generate abstract paintings, a system to detect moral reasoning to a robot aiming to connect people in public space.
