Dear students,

Just as a quick reminder, tomorrow afternoon we are going to work with OpenFrameworks and this requires you to download an IDE (a programming envt) and OpenFrameworks itself and go through some install steps. Given that these downloads are large and install take some, do this before tomorrow.

See
http://openframeworks.cc/download/
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/resources/working-with-openframeworks

Also if you experience any issues with logging into Google sites / editing drop me an email, see also
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/resources/working-with-google-sites

Contact me if there are any other isses

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Peter

Dear students,

As mentioned in class coming Friday April 20 I will host an extra OpenFrameworks walk in hour, or actually two hours, from 11-1300, in 413. In principle this is targeted at those who want to get a bit more familiar with OpenFrameworks and the underlying C++ language.

The format in principle is self study with the opportunity to ask questions, either using some of the self study examples hosted here on the course website
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/workshop-2/1-of-hello-world

or other online examples (OpenFrameworks website etc) or learning projects you have started with.

Also do not forget to finish your portfolio, each project needs to be listed once on the website, naming all project team members; the other project team members should still have a placeholder entry under their portfolio but link there to the project description. See https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/workshop-1/assignment-1

Coming Friday I will be at LIACS and available between 3-530 should anyone want to swing by for Lab 2 questions or discussion.

Also my #1 expo location did not come through in the end so I am still scouting for a location, min say 140 m2, ideally larger up to any size (we have done >1000m2 at some point), that we could use for free (or very low cost) in return for a cool event.

We only need electricity, target date June 29-30 (week earlier as back up) with some build up / break down.

Leiden/The Hague ideal, for the right location we could also do a cities a bit further away like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Delft.

Tips welcome!

Hi students,

I am really looking forward to the OF/Space projects tomorrow. In the afternoon we will focus on AI, machine learning and the creative use of it.

We will be using Wekinator, which allows you to classify input from sensors and connect it to output to take action.

So if you have specific sensors you want to play with take them with you. Check the Wekinator website for examples and if you want you can already download it. Apologies for the late notice.

Cu tomorrow!

Hi all, for those who missed it, and perhaps it wasnt fully clear: deadline for documentation of lab 2 is this Thu end of day. If you worked in a group, a single project page can hold all the details, but do put a page/link under the other group members pages referring to this so that the portfolios are complete.

Hi creative researchers!

I have changed the title of the expo from Creating Nature to Hacking Nature - a bit catchier but the theme remains the same. Speaking of the theme, I have posted some more elaboration of the theme on the website, with some selected links for inspiration - including some events and expos that are worth checking out.

If you have any comments, questions or feedback just post on this thread (or mail).

Peter

PS location is work in progress, with two options that are looking interesting, always interested in other options for back up (150m2 min).

I should have final confirmation in the coming days on the location. Both options are in The Hague, and offer plenty of space. One location is one large space of 24x14m and the other location actually even consists of a number of spaces. In other words, you can think big!

As discussed, you can work solo or in teams of up to 3 - teaming up preferred as you can put more work, creativity and brains into a single project.

We will plan a location visit once the location is confirmed. I have also added some more ‘inspiration’ events at https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/open-lab-expo

The expo location is confirmed, De Samenscholing in Den Haag. It’s an old high school so there is a lot of space and room for creative options.

Coming Friday June 8 at 11:00 we will visit the location, please aim to be there as it makes a big difference to have seen the space also to imagine what the expo will be like, where you want to have your project exactly etc.

See here for more details and some pics from the site:

Dear students,

It was great to see you all today at De Samenscholing. To recap some of the main points we discussed:

Project teasers

Put a (working) title, group members and up to 3 sentences as a teaser on the front page (https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/) under ‘EXHIBITED WORKS AND CREATIVE RESEARCHERS’, if possible with some kind of visual. The main goal for the above is to draw people to the expo - these are teasers so you dont need give your entire project away. For example something in the form of a what if question can work well. If your project is still in flux, still put something on there and you can keep it more cryptic. See https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2017/ for examples from last year.

I would appreciate if you can do this as soon as possible - you can refine later if you want - but I would like to have some good content on the homepage. But at least no later as Friday June 17.

Texts for project cards and posters - Tuesday June 26.  Extend the text above a bit to a short text that we can use for project cards that we are going to produce to place next to the projects (think what could fit under A5 or smaller). Or use the same text, not more than a couple of sentences.

Communicating the event

Please help to promote the event either by distributing the link or if you are a facebook user signing up to and inviting people to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1027573080725116/. Also feel free to post teaser content to the event. If you have any other tips for promoting the event let me know.

What goes where

Please add under ‘What Goes Where’ on https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/open-lab-expo what space you would like to use for your project and let Suzan know (and resolve any conflicts amongst yourselves). Check this page also for further details on deadlines and logistics.

Dear students,

Gentle reminder - by tomorrow project teasers need to be posted on the front page (https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/) see previous post.

[For completeness, text from an email sent out earlier today]

Dear students,

We entering the final stretch for the expo. I know you have all been very busy with course load but good luck this week with the prep! Here are some final notes.

Logistics

See the internal page for full details on logistics and whats expected – and make edits where relevant:
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/open-lab-expo

With respect to borrowable eqpt (projectors etc) either Maarten, Max or Edwin can lend borrowable equipment out. Note that Friday none of them will be at LIACS given the thesis presentations, so any equipment needs to be picked up before then. Also please add a note to the internal page above if you have borrowed certain equipment so that other groups know and can look for alternative solutions if need be.

As discussed I highly encourage to build up on Thursday already, and potentially keep working on the project from there, as there are always last minute issues. If you are planning to drive over by car on Thu for transport and may have some extra space indicate it at the link above (end of page). Ask Suzan by when the first group arrives – we tentatively said it was going to be open at 10 and the first group can let the others in.

We open Fri 3 pm sharp. I am also looking into whether we can have some speakers for Saturday on the topic of Hacking Nature but this is a bit last minute. We also have someone from KABK who kindly offered to take photographs, but also take your camera if you have one and we can share all the pics on some online album. I will have to be at the thesis presentation until around noon as I supervise a number of students but then come as quickly as possible, and Stijn in cc will be there from the morning onwards to help with any production issues or other request you would normally have asked me, and you can as Suzan location specific questions.

Let’s aim to do most of the break down on Saturday evening – in my experience that goes very fast. We may need some volunteers for clean up on Sunday if we cant finish that Sat evening.

Promotion

I have promoted the event widely but it is always good to have a bit of a final push in the week leading up to the event.

If you are a Facebook user, I have noticed we have a good number of folks already indicating that they are ‘interested’ (270+ and counting) but the number of invitees is quite low. Just go to ‘share’ and choose ‘Invite friends’ in the drop down. Also it would be nice if during this week some further teaser content gets posted by you in the Facebook event – it is ‘open’ so anyone can post.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1027573080725116/

If you are not on facebook you can for example just refer to the expo web site
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/
Or personalize and send the attached invite.

So go ahead and share & invite, and if you have any further tips for people/channel to contact let me know.

Also based on whatever text I see on the public facing expo page by close of play Tuesday
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/
I will make project boards to be placed next to the works. So if you have any updates, do that asap / before end of day Tuesday.

If you have any further questions, comments etc please post them on the forum so that others can keep track
https://mediatechnology.leiden.edu/forum/viewthread/2075/
Or if super urgent / specific, drop me a mail.

And all details are also on the internal expo page
https://sites.google.com/site/newmedianewtechnology2018/nmnt-class/open-lab-expo

Good luck with the works, and looking forward to Friday! It is going to be a great event I am sure!
