Dear students and coaches,

This is the forum topic for the 2016-2017 Semester Project. Much information about the project will be shared here. Soon we hope to present the initial themes here and post further guidelines on how to apply for themes.

Semester Project Manual
Here is a link to the Semester Project Manual. Read it. No, study it. Or better, memorize it before you tattoo its full content onto your body!

Dear semester-project participants,

A list of themes was developed by the lecturers. Given the nature of the overall theme, we have decided to not accept student suggestions for added themes, this year.

The overall theme is “RETURN” and the final sub-themes are:

- Control
- Alt
- Delete
- Escape
- Right
- Command
- 0 (zero)
- Shift
- Function

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

1) Each of you must send an e-mail message to mediatechnology [AT] leiden.edu, at latest on Tuesday June 28 2016, that contains the following information:
- e-mail subject: “Semester project theme preferences”
- your name,
- the three themes that you prefer to work on, ordered from strongest preference (1) to third-most preference (3),
- the name of one student that you do not wish to be teamed-up with.

Here is a simple example to help you:

Tomediatechnology#leiden.edu
SubjectSemester project theme preferences

My name is
Kim Jong Un.
My preferred themes are:
    (
1Delete,
    (
2Alt,
    (
3Control.
I would rather not be teamed-up with studentHannibal Lecter

2) We will treat all e-mails confidentially.

3) We will make teams of 3 or 2 students and assign them a theme. Naturally we will attempt where possible to respect your preferences, but you should understand that full compliance is combinatorically never possible. If we did not receive the above e-mail from you before the deadline, we will decide for you (and you may be teamed-up with Hannibal Lecter).

4) In this forum-thread we will announce the teams and themes. This may take some time (like 10 days), since it is difficult to match preferences.

5) Coaches will be assigned to the groups in September.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to read the Semester Project Manual!

Dear students,

Thank you for sending us your theme preferences; it is much appreciated! Three students had not replied by Wed Jun 29, 18h30, so they have been assigned to a group without knowing their preferences.

What did we do?

Nanda & Maarten have worked hard to match your preferences to the themed groups as well as possible. As you will understand, this is a difficult task, given all its constraints. Thanks to our smarts and cunningness, we have managed to
- match 18 of you with their first-preferred theme!
- match 2 of you with their second theme preference,
- match 1 of you with his/her third theme preference,
- respect all your wishes regarding whom not to work with.
We did not form groups based on other things than the supplied preferences (so we did not match specific students together for whatever reason).

And, the groups are…

- Control: Petra, Max, Daisy
- Control: Mark, Emily, Sieta
- Alt: Robbert, Kaan, Stijn
- Escape: Jonna, Lucia, Laurens
- Escape: Matthijs T, Haoran, Esra
- Zero: Maral, Riccardo, Matthijs H
- Shift: Dan, George, Robin
- Function: Helena, Carlos, Hélène

What happens next?

- We expect you to start exploring your group’s theme. Read about them, and explore different angles from which your theme can be viewed. Try to find observations, implications, or thoughts about your theme that surprise you or challenge the mind.

- Take plenty of time for the exploration phase, so don’t wait too long with getting started. It is your own responsibility to start working and/or contact your group mates.

- A coach will be assigned to each group sometime in September, as always.

- If you did not yet read the Semester Project Manual, then do so.

Kind regards,
Maarten & Nanda

We are considering prior component grading. In that case, should we hand in the one page description on Friday? Is anyone going to read it (as most of the staff will be going to Linz) before Wednesday? With this I mean to ask whether it is possible to hand in the description next week. Should we send it to the general media tech e-mail address?

Actually, since we have more plenary sessions than in previous years, for prior component grading, it is best to hand in the first component (a motivated statement) not at the upcoming session, but at a later one. It is still way too early to have the statement ready. Around late October is the expected moment for prior grading of component “statement”.

Hope you understand and agree. We will update the manual to better reflect this. The current manual was written when there were only two plenary sessions, but by request of students, more have been planned.

These are the coaches for this year’s groups. Please understand that the coach does not initiate work or ideas, but acts more as a dedicated listener and commentor to your ideas. It is the responsibility of each group to contact their coach and set a meeting.

As mentioned earlier, a coach still had to be assigned to the first Control groep (Max, Daisy, Petra). This has been completed, see above post.

We are looking for one, two or three participant(s) of the Semester Project that want(s) to (collaborate on the) design of the flyer and poster. Experience with graphic design is a requirement

Please contact me when you’re interested (and include your phone number in the mail).

All the best!

Edwin

Hi Edwin

Do you already know if we will all be in one big space together or if we will divide the group across separate spaces?
Do you have an indication of the duration of the opening night (from 17h to 22h for instance)?
We need this information for the design of our work.

Best,
The Function Group

I have not personally seen the location yet, so I cannot answer your first question.

The expected / tentative planning for Jan 25 (Wed) is this:
- 09:30 - 13:00h evaluation committee visits the works. Students explain their choices and answer questions.
- 13:00 - 16:00h evaluation committee discusses the works in private and generates the evaluations. Meanwhile students prepare the space for the opening ceremony.
- 17:00 - 19:00/20:00h opening event.
- > 22:00h, grades are posted in the Semester project vault. Written motivations for the grades follow several days later.

Naturally this may change, but probably won’t.

Hello,
do you have any more specific information about the expo location yet? Such as photos of the space, if it is possible to hang things etc.? We need to know this as soon as possible because our project heavily depends on it and we might not be the only ones. Thank you.

Dear all,

On Wednesday January 11th we will be visiting HUBspot at 15:00.

It’s important that you’re all there and explain your works so that we can come to a plan of how to use the spaces.

If you like you can visit the HUBspot on your own before the 11th but please don’t bother them with questions. The 11th is the moment to collectively visit the space, ask questions and make decisions.

Here you can find the plan of HUBspot:
http://liacs.leidenuniv.nl/~heideefvan/Hubspot_plan_1st_and_2nd_floor.pdf
Please note that we are on the upper floor which is the second page of the document.

We will have the spaces between:
[A-B and 4-7] (green)
[B-C and 4-7] (red)
[E-C and 5-6] (orange)
There is a small chance that we will also have [A-C and 7-8] (red). This is still unknown and depends on where a new separation door will be build. The door will either be build at [B-C and 7] or [B-C and 8]

In the past we have had an exhibition with a (sound)walk that went through a bigger part of the building then the spaces used officially for the exhibition. If it fits your work you could maybe come up with a similar approach in HUBspot. Of course the it would need to be discussed and approved. What I’m saying is that there might be situations in which it is possible to use more then the spaces indicated above.

Best regards!

Edwin

Have a look at HUBspot (see previous post). There are certain pipes (not all pipes are equally strong) that could be used to hang something but this very much depends on the weight. Please note that none of the pipes are officially meant to hang something on. It might be a good idea to make yourself more independent from the need to hang by, for example, building a frame.
