The theme of ACE 2013 is “Making New Knowledge”. We hope to receive many excellent papers dealing practically as well as theoretically with this theme, inspired by John Seely Brown’s lecture on “tinkering as a mode of knowledge construction”, by the fact that making games and toys is often even more fun than playing with them, and by the very hands-on creative approach with which ACE participants have always explored the boundaries of creative technology.

==== THE CONFERENCE ====

ACE has become the leading scientific forum for dissemination of cutting-edge research results in the area of entertainment computing. Interactive entertainment is one of the most vibrant areas of interest in modern society and is amongst the fastest growing industries in the world. ACE 2013 will bring together leading researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to present their innovative work and discuss all aspects and challenges of interactive entertainment technology, in an exciting, cultural, and stimulating environment.

ACE is by nature a multi-disciplinary conference, therefore attracting people across a wide spectrum of interests and disciplines including computer science, design, arts, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and marketing. The main goal of ACE is to stimulate discussion in the development of new and compelling entertainment computing and interactive art concepts and applications. All ACE participants are encouraged to present work they believe will shape the future, going beyond the established paradigms, and focusing on all areas related to interactive entertainment.

== TYPES OF SUBMISSION ====

We invite paper submissions in various tracks: regular papers for the main track, special sessions, poster papers, interactive art and creative showcases. Accepted submissions in these tracks will be published with a major publisher. In addition, we invite proposals for workshops and kids’ workshops, and submissions to the ACE 2013 Game Competition.

OHM2013 – Observe. Hack. Make. is a 5-day international outdoor technology and security conference. OHM2013 is currently requesting proposals for content.

A motley bunch of around 3000 hackers, free-thinkers, philosophers, activists, geeks, scientists, artists, creative minds and others will convene from all over the world for this informal meeting of minds to contemplate, reflect, share, criticize, look ahead, code, build, and more.

An otherwise unassuming stretch of land, just 30km (20mi) North of Amsterdam, will be transformed into a colourful oasis of light providing a backdrop for this unique event. It is an immersive experience, with an emphasis on interaction.

The four-yearly Dutch hacker camps provide a very open, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with a high level of knowledge. The campsite is buzzing with energy, ideas and projects, not least because people from various backgrounds are interacting. It is a non-commercial community event where every visitor is also a volunteer.

MzTEK is excited to have been invited to manage The Open Data Institute’s data-as-culture art commissions for their launch.

The UK’s groundbreaking Open Data Institute (ODI), an independent organisation led by Gavin Starks, and founded by Professors Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Nigel Shadbolt, is formally launching later this year.

We are inviting proposals for new or existing artworks to enhance the ODI’s premises in London.

Proposals are sought for all forms of data-driven art, including: screen, wall, or ceiling based, free-standing, roaming, interactive, site-specific, permanent or temporary. We are looking for time-based or kinetic works but all data-generated work will be accepted for review.

The ODI is a collaboration between leading businesses and entrepreneurs, universities and researchers, government and civil society to unlock enterprise and social value from the vast amount of Open Data now being made accessible. As a collaborative, dynamic space which will host a diverse range of innovators, we are aiming for the commissioned artwork to give visual momentum to the environment, by bringing the space alive and inspiring new perspectives on Open Data.

The work should, in some way, and incorporate or reflect data from the ODI’s focus on value: which can be social, economic, and/or environmental. Data can be real-time or static, collected from personal or local sensors (e.g. heart-rate, movement, transport systems) or online global sources (e.g. stock market fluctuations, air pollution, population demographics). We are interested in work that represents change, movement, and fluctuation in data in innovative ways, abstractly or literally.

Submission requirements

A web page (URLs can be private/protected) containing:

*   a 300-400 word description

* up to 3 images (photographs, renders or sketches)

* an animation or video (if relevant)

* your expected technical needs such as floor, wall or ceiling space, displays, large projection screen, wifi, plinths/tables, etc.

* an estimated budget for materials and installation costs (e.g. 2 x Arduino Ethernet boards, 10 x Bare Conductive paint pens, 1,000 surface mount LEDs)

Please submit proposals via this online application form.

Artists may submit more than one proposal.

Artist Fees

We aim to engage at least 5 artists:

* Existing or adapted works will be awarded £1,000

* New commissions will receive up to £3,000

These fees will include production time, plus attendance to an initial site-visit (1/2 day), installation/delivery of work, and take-down. Materials will be budgeted separately per work, a number of displays and screen technologies are available. Individual arrangements will be made for non-UK based artists.

Works will be insured by The ODI when on-site but transportation insurance will be the responsibility of the artist.

Schedule

Brief issued: 16th October 2012

Drop-in viewing times: 4 – 7pm 19th & 22nd October 2012
( location: Open Data Institute, 3rd Floor, 65 Clifton Street, London, EC2A 4JE [map] )

Proposal deadline: 6pm Sunday 28th October 2012

Shortlisted artists contacted: 29-30th October 2012

Commissions confirmed by: 31th October 2012

Install dates: 23rd, 24th & 25th November 2012

Preview: 30th November 2012

The ODI premises consist of 5000 sq. ft. of open-plan workspaces, a large meeting room, a smaller meeting room, a reception area, and a number of circular meeting ‘pods’. We encourage anyone interested in proposing site-specific work to drop in on a viewing day (4 – 7pm, 19th & 22nd October 2012). We would like the works to remain on-site for a minimum of 6 months.

Further Information

The ODI has engaged MzTEK to manage this exciting commissioning process. MzTEK is a non-profit organisation with the aim of addressing the imbalance of women artists working in the fields of new media, computer arts, and technology.

As an equal opportunity organisation The ODI welcomes applications from all artists, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, marital status, sexuality, age or disability. Our offices are accessible. Please complete our equality questionnaire with your submission to help us monitor diversity of artists working in this area.

Please email commissions at mztek dot org if you have any questions. We appreciate that the timescales for this project is extremely tight and will endeavour to respond swiftly.

The ODI reserves the right to commission work directly should the number or quality of entries be insufficient.

xCoAx2013

27-28 June 2013 Bergamo, Italy

submit until 31 December 2012

The development of computational tools and media has been radically transforming the landscape for the practice of design, the arts and numerous cultural manifestations. Recognizing this, xCoAx is designed as a multi-disciplinary and nomadic enquiry on arts, computers, computation, communication and the elusive x factor that connects them all.
xCoAx is a forum for the exchange of ideas and the discovery of new and profitable synergies. It is an event exploring the frontiers of digital arts with the participation of a diverse confluence of computer scientists, media practitioners and theoreticians, that will focus on the relations between what can and cannot be computed, what can and cannot be communicated, what is beautiful and how humans and computational systems intersect in the development of new directions in aesthetics.
